The Symphony and University Bands are excited to share this first concert of the Winter 2021 semester. The University Band will perform selected movements from Darius Mihaud's Suite Francaise (1944). Each movement is named after one of the five "distinct French Provinces in which the American and Allied armies fought together with the French underground during the liberation of France" in World War II. The composer "wanted the young American to hear the popular melodies of those parts of France where their fathers and brothers fought to defeat the German invaders." The Symphony Band will perform several works, including marches and folk tunes. And in celebration of Black History Month, the Symphony Band will feature “A Movement For Rosa” by Mark Camphouse, honoring the Civil Rights Heroine Rosa Parks. Congressman John Conyers said: “Rosa Parks moved civil rights issues from the back of the bus to the front of America’s conscience.” Composed in 1992, this is an emotionally moving work with beautiful musical lines as well as haunting reminders of racism’s lingering presence in modern American society.
